About Us
The stated need for an organization such as the American Self-Defense Aaccociation is driven by the fact that in recent years there has been increased pressure for individuals doing business in the martial arts industry to obtain professional certification, if they are to be considered legitimate and have the full confidence of the public.
Attempts made to address the issue of Post Black Belt Rank (PBBR) certification has often lead to the exposure of gaping holes in the traditional way of bestowing advanced martial science rank on a candidate. In the past, most organizations never placed an emphasis on PBBR. In most martial arts organizations, there were no training curriculums beyond that of a student receiving a Black Belt. For those organizations that do have a PBBR program, most of them are either devoid of any real martial content or they are extremely political (or both).
The absence of a creditable PBBR program amongst many of the martial arts institutions has resulted in PBBR certification being issued to individuals without being held accountable for any real martial science knowledge. Promotional criteria such as: [1] time spent associated with the martial arts (not necessarily training in it), [2] political determination of rank that is characteristic of many small independent organizations or single martial arts schhols and [3] fly-by night online martial art certificate traffickers that will promote anyone.
In many instances, the rank or belts of “Rensi, Kyoshi or Hanshi” has been bestowed upon individuals out without any knowledge of the universal meaning behind these ranks and belts.
It is out of these direct circumstances that Dr. LeRoy Hines, Jr. who is a Soke of his own martial arts system became motivated to create the American Self-Defense Aaccociation. After carefully researching the martial arts industry, his study conclude that roughly 74.2% of martial art instructors do not belong to any formal martial arts organization. Many of these Instructors either self-promote themselves or buy their rank certification via the internet or some use-to-be, who is cashing in on his or her onec popular name.
Then, the roughly more than 25% of instructors that do belong to some sort of martial arts organization are paying fees that are nothing less than exorbitant. These martial arts organizations largely cater to the tournament competition going group and the traditional martial artist who practices for a hobby. Most of these organizations have failed to support those individual who are looking for realistic martial arts training, not sports or cultural martial arts.
Another failure of the aforementioned martial art orginazations is the lack of provision of self-defense training for professionals such as: law enforcement, security personnel, or the military. These are jus a few professionals whose job performance can be enhanced by martial arts training.
In most cases, the "flashy highly partner cooperative" techniques that these organizations regard as self-defense training are not taken seriously by professionals, whose very life can depend on martial arts self-defense training.
By founding ASDA, Dr. Hines intent is to rectify the aforementioned by aggressively providing ASDA as a vehicle for continuous martial arts learning and certification.
ASDA will accomplish these goals through the provision of scheduled seminars, scheduled visits to member sites, online training media and scheduled appointments for its members through out the year.
Dr. LeRoy Hines, Jr. has a simple purpose in life. He wants to push the martial arts as a science to its highest heights and then some. By adopting this personal mandate, Dr. Hines probably will not win a Nobel Prize or anything like it, but it’s his own little contribution to the martial arts world. A world of which he has spent his whole life mastering the sciences of self-defense.
Dr. Hines holds a 10th degree black belt in Afrijitsu, the system of which he founded, a 8th degree black belt in Goshi Shun Karate, 7th degree black belt in Jafa-Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kyun, Bursa Silat, Kali, gung fu wushu, Native American knife fighting, and has studied with great Martial Arts Masters such as Mahn Suh Park, James Fain, Anthony Tennessee, Louis Armstrong, Professor Wally Jay and Mike J. Armatraut, leonard Triggs, Louis Armstrong.
